>> breaking news in southern california. ferocious wildfire just north of riverside has been burning out of control since 4:30 this afternoonwith

hundreds being evacuated. fire quickly spread through rancho rope a regional park through several neighborhoods northwest of downtown riverside. heavy smoke rising in the sky scene from los angeles about 60 miles to the west. more than 200 firefighters are on the scene right now with cal fire reporting 150 acres burned so far and the blaze at only 20 percent contained. good news is winds are lit down there. however fire officials have cut back on air attacks. there is concern about flying in power lines and not enough light to see clearly and fight the fire effectively. but again it has been a real fire fight down there. good evening i'm dan ashley. firefighters in that area certainly extremely busy tonight. just minutes ago crew contain this blaze that started with mobile home in the back of a house. residents trying to use garden hoses to help fight the fire. now this fire appears to have been sparked by ember from the wildfire we talked about here at the top if

you miles away. so again very busy evening for the rare winter wildfires for firefighters inouthern california. coming back up here to this part of the state. 48 hours after the murder of 2 santa cruz detectives we are learning more about the criminal past of the gun man and the escape that he was planning. 7 news begins our coverage. >> to you we now know the detectives had absolutely no chance to protect themselves or return fire. >>reporter: santa cruz county sheriff's says the detectives had been in the neighborhood looking for jeremy goulet for 20 minutes when he appeared with the 45 caliber handgun shooting and killing both detective sergeant baker and detective butler. >> neither officer was wearing body armor at the time of the incident. of however body armor would not have helped. >>reporter: police now say goulet was arrested many times for sex reroo lateed caims including on rape charms in hawaii. he's also suspected of

sex crimes involving a juvenile girl in santa cruz and when he killed the officers on tuesday, he was being questioned on a sexual assault. when confronted he was wearing officer butt remember body arm more and fired on them with guns in both hands. they returned fire killing the 35-year-old. on his body police found evidence he may have been trying to the leave town. >> but he also possessed his passport and airplane ticket to the state of new mexico and he was due to fly out this week. >> reporting in santa cruz, abc 7 news. neighbors who live on the street with the tragedy happened still can't believe that this went down. tonight we have home video that shows the intense police response after the first barrage of gunfire. here's laura anthony. >> sorry for the officers. >>reporter: realtor howard allen chokes up when he talks about the 2 officers killed not
